Arjun Walia, Collective Evolution, May 21, 2017 Shadows of Paradise is one of the films premiering at the ILLUMINATE film festival. This film documents the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Movement with intimate access to two of TM’s leaders — iconic filmmaker David Lynch and dedicated disciple Bobby Roth. The film documents the movement’s metamorphosis following the death of founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Having grown up within TM, Director Sebastian Lange approaches his subject through an introspective lens, seeking to reconcile the present-day incarnation with the teachings and practices that have shaped his worldview.

Previously named Maharishi International University, MUM was created in the 1970s when the TM Movement purchased Parson's College in Fairfield and created an accredited university in which all fields are taught in the light of the Science of Creative Intelligence, of which TM is the practical aspect.

Her mother was a follower of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and Hoffman spent most of her childhood in a community in Fairfield, Iowa that was devoted to Transcendental Meditation. Hoffman, who writes about her unusual upbringing in the new memoir Greetings from Utopia Park, tells Fresh Air's Dave Davies that moving to the utopian community from New York City when she was kindergarten-aged was idyllic — at least initially.
